Undergraduate Spotlight Details:
Within the context of a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum, the University of Alabama’s Dance Program offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree that prepares students for successful and productive lives as dance artists, educators, and scholars.
The program’s curriculum is designed to foster inclusive learning and intellectual curiosity while teaching students the skillsets essential to the creative process, scholarly inquiry, and professional engagement in the field of dance. One of the program’s greatest strengths is the diversity of classes offered: in addition to training in ballet, contemporary dance, and jazz, students are offered a wide range of professional skills including choreography, dance for the camera, pedagogy, lighting and sound design, and anatomy. With this breadth of knowledge, students are well-placed to achieve a sustainable future in dance, contributing as skilled artists and global citizens. BA candidates are encouraged to stretch themselves still further by studying outside the department in one of UA’s other exceptional major and minor programs.
Students have multiple opportunities to appear on stage in the program’s 622-seat Dance Theatre, as well as additional national and international touring programs. Highlights of the season include the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre concert, in which students perform works by faculty and guest artists, and the Emerging Choreographers' Showcase, which features student choreography. Other opportunities include the MFA Dance Concert, Dance Alabama Film Festival, Alabama Dance Festival, American College Dance Association, and international tours to the Edinburgh Fringe.
The goal of the UA Dance program is preparation for the breadth of the field, and every year the program celebrates its graduates as they begin careers as professional dancers, artistic directors, choreographers, dance teachers, arts administrators, lighting and costume designers, studio managers, and so many other fruitful journeys. The program’s alumni have worked with Alabama Ballet, Complexions, Atlanta Ballet, STREB Dance Company, Jeanne Ruddy Dance, the Radio City Rockettes, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Philadanco, Gus Giordano Dance, Disney Productions, Broadway tours, pro-sports dance teams, theme parks, music artists, and cruise lines. Those seeking further education are regularly accepted into leading graduate programs.
A formal audition is required for entry into the dance program in addition to acceptance into The University of Alabama.
The BA in Dance is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

Graduate Spotlight Details:
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance degree at the University of Alabama will develop students’ creative, performance, and scholarly work and prepare them for multiple professional destinations as dance artists, scholars, and educators. The program supports the development of diverse skills in movement forms, dance pedagogy, historical perspectives, critical theory, and creative and scholarly research practices.
Over the course of three years in Tuscaloosa, MFA candidates complete a minimum of 60 credit hours in movement and creative practices and dance studies courses. Students will have numerous opportunities to create, collaborate, and perform including the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre concert, in which students perform works by faculty and guest artists, and the annual MFA Dance Concert, featuring works by graduate students. Students are encouraged to share their work off campus and have successfully presented at the American College Dance Association, Alabama Dance Festival, film festivals, the Edinburgh Fringe, National Dance Education Organization, and Collegium for African Diaspora Dance conferences. Students will also complete a substantial capstone project demonstrating a synthesis of craft, artistic vision, and conceptual rigor, as well as demonstrate professional competence in their selected research area.
Admittance is based on an audition and interview with faculty in the dance program and acceptance into The University of Alabama Graduate School. Candidates with some professional experience are given preference, and a bachelor’s degree is required. Based on students’ experience and expertise, select graduate candidates are eligible for assistantships which are applied toward tuition, course fees, and health insurance, and provide a monthly stipend.
The MFA in Dance is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).
