Undergraduate Spotlight Details:
Adelphi University offers professional training by internationally renowned faculty. Faculty members include department chair Orion Duckstein, Paul Taylor Dance Company; Frank Augustyn, National Ballet of Canada; Adelheid B. Strelick of Theater Ulm; and Ballet Frankfurt’s William Forsythe. Other faculty members have performed with the American Ballet Theatre, Pennsylvania Ballet, Complexions, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, David Parsons, Kizuno Dance Theater, Dual Rivet, Cullen & Them, and more. The technically challenging program includes performance opportunities with faculty and guests from the professional dance world. Past guest choreographers include Jirí Kylián, Lar Lubovitch, Paul Taylor and residency with Paul Taylor 2, Rasta Thomas, Aszure Barton, Earl Mosley, Manuel Vignoulle, Mark Morris, David Parsons, Pascal Rioult, Takehiro Ueyama, Winston Brown, Larry Keigwin, Doug Varone & Dancers, Albert del Saz, and Omar Román De Jesús. Graduates have gone on to perform with Graham 2, Boston Dance Theater, Axis Dance Company, Joss Arnott Dance, Parsons Dance, Rioult Dance NY, Dances Patrelle, Inter-Steps on Broadway, Amy Marshall Dance Company, Feld Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Elisa Monte, Mazzini Dance Collective, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Alison Cook Beatty Dance, Edge Dance Company, London, Fosse Project, Nikolais-Louis Dance, Garth Fagan Dance, Joyce Trisler Dance, Cirque du Soleil’s Broadway production Paramour, and An American in Paris tour, Saxyn Dance Works, and Taylor Ensemble. Students have worked with New York City dance companies during their third- and fourth-year internships, including Parsons Dance, Rioult Dance NY, Gibney Dance, Gallim Dance, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Company, Martha Graham Dance Company, and Doug Varone & Dancers, Jacobs Pillow. Classes in Ballet, Pointe, Pas de deux, Contemporary Modern, Partnering, Choreography, Improvisation, Countertechnique, Theory and Composition, Dance History, Music Theory, Anatomy, and Pilates are held in new facilities. The Department of Dance holds auditions on the Adelphi Garden City Campus during the fall and spring semesters by appointment only. Talent scholarships are available.
