SPOTLIGHT DETAILS

Graduate Spotlight Details:
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Dance at the University of Alabama will develop students’ creative, performance, and scholarly work and prepare them for multiple professional destinations as dance artists, scholars, and educators. The program supports the development of diverse skills in movement forms, dance pedagogy, historical perspectives, critical theory, and creative and scholarly research practices. Over the course of three years in Tuscaloosa, MFA candidates complete a minimum of 60 credit hours in movement and creative practices and dance studies courses. Students will have numerous opportunities to create, collaborate, and perform and are encouraged to submit their work to national and international festivals and conferences. Students will also complete a substantial Capstone Project demonstrating a synthesis of craft, artistic vision, and conceptual rigor, as well as demonstrate professional competence in their selected research area. Admittance is based on an audition and interview with faculty in the Dance Program and acceptance into The University of Alabama’s Graduate School. Candidates with some professional experience are given preference, and a bachelor’s degree is required. Based on students’ experience and expertise, select graduate candidates are eligible for assistantships which are applied toward tuition, course fees, and health insurance, and provide a monthly stipend.
